There are many....: These ethnic groups occupy the thalassemia belt, which is a geographic area that overlaps with areas endemic for malarial pathogens such as plasmodium falciparum and plasmodium vivax. Thalassemia and a host of hemoglobinopathies are thought to confer resistance to malaria. The downside to these protective mechanisms is that some willl inherit combinations that are pathologic.
