Higher and Higher.: Traumatized tissue reacts by what is called inflammation. The damaged area begins to swell, effectively immobilizing the damaged tissues, facilitating repair. Swelling, in effect, is natures cast. Elevation will decrease the natural benefit of swelling. Therefore, the swelling is now replaced by means of a splint, cast or immobilizing dressing. Applying ice works in a similar fashion.
