Fibromyalgia symptom: Symptoms of fibromyalgia (is that your q?)=painful muscles, joints, tendons, soft tissues. Allergy symp: itching, sneezing, congestion, coughing, wheezing, etc. There is little overlap. Food allergies can cause abdominal pain and rarely joint pain, but mainly episodically after the food, not chronically like fibromyalgia. Both have fatigue. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmedhealth/pmh0001463/.

Different: Fibromyalgia & allergies have relatively mutually exclusive signature symptom constellations. Fibromyalgia symptoms include chronic widespread painful muscle spasm, chronic fatigue, restless sleep & foggy mental process. Allergy symptoms manifest as airway constrictions, itching & rashes, swellings, & other effects of inflammation. The pathophysiology of allergies is known, but not known for FM.

Fibromyalgia sufferers oft obese & have poor sleep. Non-restorative sleep begets depression & fatigue, which begets inactivity, deconditioning & weight gain. Exercise helps, but is oft painful for FM sufferers. Aquatherapy has helped many break this cycle. Concurrent weight reduction via avoidance of carbohydrates. Walks & tai chi are also helpful.

Can my diet prevent allergies?

No: No. There are many myths surrounding allergies, but many studies have looked at this issue and show quite conclusively that mom's diet doesn't affect junior's chance of getting allergies. Enjoy whatever foods you'd like.

What is the test for allergies?

Skin testing is best: Allergies are best tested with skin tests. Blood tests like immunocap and rast testing are alternatives but are not as accurate. Skin tests are usually preformed by an allergist.

Do children grow out of allergies?

Yes: Children may outgrow specific allergies, especially infants with mild food allergy. They often however "grow into" new allergies. The ability to develop or have allergy is never outgrown.
A member asked:

Is it safe to take medication for fibromyalgia during pregnancy?

Dr. David Fein

Some yes, some no: Interestingly, for some women, fibromyalgia symptoms may actually improve during their pregnancy (although they may risk a worsening relapse post-partum). Most natural remedies are safe in pregnancy, such as omega3 fish oil, massage, exercise, yoga, etc. Some prescription medications may be safe in pregnancy, also, but it's best to check with your md.
A 28-year-old member asked:

Can stress cause fibromyalgia during pregnancy?

Yes: Unfortunately, the truthful answer to the question is yet, but in many cases, we will see many women with fibromyalgia and certain other auto-immune disorders actually improve during their pregnancies. For unexplained reasons, joint pain, muscle pain, fatigue, and other symptoms can improve during pregnancy. However, there is a risk for a relapse in the post-partum time period.

Fibromyalgia has not been found to be autoimmune in nature. Evidence supports an abnormality in pain processing with abnormal pain signals. It is unclear what causes fibromyalgia to develop. Many people are able to relate onset with stress, illness, surgery, trauma or injury but many are not. There are other causes of pain in pregnancy also such as weight change, pressure on other organs, edema.

I agree with Dr. True. Studies have often failed to document the onset of fibromyalgia to a major stressful event. Evaluations have found major stress prior to FM onset to occur in only 5% of patients, not a statistically significant value.
