Macroglossia: Is it that you really have a large tongue (macroglossia) or was it that it was hard to work inside your mouth for another reason? People that are missing their back teeth can have enlarged tongues or it may have just been difficult for you to control your tongue after it was numbed. Other cases of macroglossia include downs.

No.: A large tongue does not mean down syndrome. Lots of normal people have large tongues. Believe it or not, people with Down syndrome don't have large tongues, they have small mouths! large tongue can be a part of other syndromes, but there are many other findings also.

A 28-year-old male asked:

What is the definition or description of: large tongue?

Not inside mouth: A "large" tongue is one that cannot be easily kepp inside the mouth with lips closed. It is important to differentitate between a tongue that is truly large and one that protrudes form the mouth because of poor muscle control. A true large tongue is often associated with tooth and jaw deformity. Tongues may be large due to tumors, vascular malformations, overgrowth syndromes or storage diseases.
