Cellulitis: Painful red skin in the lower leg may be due to cellulitis. Cellulitis may develop from a small insect bite, scratching, shaving, or occur spontaneously. Alternatively you may have venous insufficiency. This is a condition where blood does not return to the heart like it should. I see this quite frequently in middle aged and older adults who are overweight. Weight loss and avoiding excessive swelling in the legs by elevating them and wearing compression stockings may help decrease the redness and swelling.

Leg redness: Did you hit or bump into some thing? If you did; then have x-ray to rule out fracture. If no trauma or injury, and the skin is wollen red and hot to touch then it may be cellulitis. Also do you remember of any insect bite? Clot! you need to be seen by your doctor for examination, diagnosis & treatment. Thanks.

Redness to calf: Although I am not sure of the history of your problem, any redness/swelling in the calf region can be a sign of infection/ cellulitis or vascular problem. If there is pain to the back of the leg, then possible an ultrasound can help to determine if there is a blood clot in the leg. If the pain and selling is to the front of the leg it may be vasculitis or inflammation of the veins.
