Emergency evaluation: Febrile neutropenia means low neutrophils which play an important in the bodies ability to fight infection. In an neutropenic state the body is susceptible to life threatening infections. If a fever is present during this period most commonly after chemotherapy then it requires an urgent medical evaluation and antibiotics which are usually given IV with growth factors to boost the neutrophil count.

F&N is a common ...: Reason for hospital admission for cancer patients. Many chemotherapy agents are myelosuppressive and will lead to a low neutrophil count. This impairs pt's ability to fight infection and can attenuate symptoms of serious bacterial infxn. Thus, symptoms can be subtle and its hard to tell if fever means something serious or innocuous. We are cautious so we admit and treat aggressively.
