Is it possible that malaria can kill someone in the us?

Yes: Malaria is not transmitted in the USA. However, if you have been traveling to an area with malaria you could become infected and 'break out' with the disease once you return home. If you develop fevers, flu-like symptoms, headaches, muscle pain, chills etc up to 3 months after your return, see your doctor immediately and tell them where you were traveling. Malaria is diagnosed with a blood test.

Yes!: But it would be almost certainly malaria caught while traveling in another country. In 2005 - 2009 there were 7379 cases of malaria reported (us cdc) with 20 fatalities during this time. Most malaria is acquired during travel to sub-saharan africa, often by us travelers visiting friends and relatives. It is possible to acquire malaria from an imported mosquito or blood transfusion but very rare.
