Maybe (not) . . .: You'll know you're getting better because you'll feel better. In some instances, coughing mucus could represent better air movement. For most, they tend to cough up more mucus early on in illness followed by lingering dry cough (average 18 day duration). Certainly, if you're feeling poorly, feverish, short of breath, etc, you should go see your family doc.
