Tongue mass: A salivary stone causing blockage of wharton's duct would appear as a swelling below the tongue not as a mass in the tongue.. A firm mass palpated in the tongue needs to be evaluated by either an oral surgeon or ear nose and throat physician. I usually recommend the patient sees a ENT surgeon that specializes in head and neck cancer surgery.

Misdiagnosed?: We can't confirm or negate the diagnosis without actually examining you. An oral surgeon should be able to distinguish between the presence of a stone in wharton's duct or something else such as a growth. While the stone is usually near the front of the tongue, it might be further back and feel more like it's inside the tongue. See an oral surgeon or even two for a 2nd opinion.
