Numbness: If your toe is burning or feels like it is "asleep, " it is likely due to neuropathy or some other nerve problem.

Nerve irritation: Burning or 'sleep' feeling in the big toe is usually due to pressure or injury to the 1st digital or deep peroneal nerve of the foot. Try to ice it and wear shoes with a wide toe box. If not relieved, see a podiatric physician.
