A member asked:

What factors can cause someone to become an alcoholic?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

A combination: of nature (genetics) and nurture (life experiences, personality issues). It is thought that perhaps 50% of the burden is genetic, making people more susceptible to the effects of alcohol in various ways. The remainder is early life trauma, development of certain psychiatric illness like anxiety disorders, PTSD, depression and bipolar disorder, social and economic pressures and other experiences.
