Injury typically: The growth plate of bones can close (fuse) too early. One reason can be injury to the growth plate, such as a fracture that crosses or involves it. There certainly are times that it can close early without any known cause as well. Additionally, surgery that involves the plate can cause it problems as well.

Plate closure: Usually exposure to sex hormones ie androgens or estrogens. These are more likely to be elevated in precocious puberty or adrenal disorders. Environmental exposure is rare but on the list.
