A member asked:

As an ent doctor, what's the most common type of inappropriate referral you see from general practitioners?

Dr. Brian Affleck answered

Specializes in ENT and Head and Neck Surgery

Not inappropriate: Referrals are made when your primary doctor is not sure what the problem is or they are unfamiliar with the best forms of treatment. It's quite appropriate to send these patients to someone specialized in fields like ent. Along those lines, it's very unusual to receive a truly inappropriate referral. Having said this, ear pain is often misdiagnosed as ear infection when it's really tmd.
