Can just happen: This can just happen to some people. Some women are prone to them. Usually are benign. Some can be related to the menstrual cycle. Some can be caused by endometriosis or other things. The pain is sometimes controlled with birth control pills or pain meds such as nsaids. The only way to remove is surgery depending on type of cyst.
