Acid irritation: Acid entering the esophagus can a) irritate the lining of the esophagus and cause a neural (nerve related) reflex spasm of the muscles in the lung that spasm with asthma or b) if the refluxed acid comes up into the throat it can be aspirated into the lungs and cause direct irritation and spasm of the bronchial muscles.
