Side of big toe hurt: The side of the big toe (hallux) hurts when one runs when the toe grips the ground during the running cycle. The hallux does this before propulsion (next phase of the gait cycle). As it grips the ground, the medial side of the toe usually abuts the ground, sustaining friction. As this occurs repeatedly, the medial side of the toe would hurt and/or develop a callus (aka pinch callus) or blister.
