Kidney Stones: Because it is sharp and hard and cuts or scrapes it's way through the urinary tract. This is normal.

Irritation: The lining of the ureters is quite fragile and sensitive. A kidney stone will irritate that lining and cause bleeding which will present as blood in the urine.
