What happens during a non-stress test (nst)?

Dr. Megan Bird
Obstetrics and Gynecology 19 years experience
Baby monitoring: A non-stress test is a way of checking on the baby. We listen to and record the fetal heart for 20-30 minutes. We are looking at the baseline heart rate and how the heart rate goes up or down. We are looking at this to see if the baby is getting enough oxygen or if there are other problems with how the baby is doing.

Do people die from cfs?

Dr. Ed Friedlander
Pathology 44 years experience
Probably not: Unlike many other physicians, i believe that chronic fatigue syndrome is real, and an immune disturbance due to some unknown virus or viruses. However, if people were dying of it, we'd almost certainly recognize some characteristic lesion. If you have cfs, good luck -- it generally remits after a while, and low-dose antidepressants and/or simply practicing new life skills seems to help some.

How does cfs relate specifically to fibromyalgia?

2 doctor answers5 doctors weighed in
Dr. Keith Rafal
Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation 39 years experience
They are overlapping: Although cfs and fibromyalgia have distinct criteria that needs to be fulfilled, they are often diagnosed together. Fatigue is a common feature with cfs and in fibromyalgia.. With the later we more often see a significant sleep disturbance which is a primary contributor to the fatigue. Although pain is certainly a feature of both, but with a positive tender point exam is confirmatory with fibro.

Dr. Chad Boomershine
Rheumatology 19 years experience
No: Chronic fatigue syndrome (cfs) is not contagious. Cfs is thought to be caused by abnormalities in brain chemistry and therefore you can't "catch" it from someone. However, some diseases that cause fatigue are contagious; eg, viral infections like mononucleosis.
