duodenum: The pancreas produces a host of digestive enzymes which enter the duodenum when the stomach contents are ready to pass to the next portion. This is full of bicarbonate (sodium bicarbonate) which is alkaline and neutralizes the stomach acids and provides the environment for the digestive enzymes to function.
