It can happen: A lot of people who require root canal have inflammation in the jaw prior to treatment. After treatment the inflammation may linger on for a while until the body heals. An anti-inflammatory will help.If you notice swelling or do not get relief, call your dentist. Earache can be due to keeping mouth open for an extended period of time. Next time, request a bite block. You may have TMJ symptoms.

WNL: It is within normal limits to have some soreness after root canal therapy. Patients often think that because there is no nerve it the tooth, there should be no pain. They forget that the bone and gum still have live nerves that can be inflamed. Call your dentist if the problem persists.

No: A sore jaw and earache are signs of infection and if the root canal was completed it seems like there is infectious activity still going on. Notify your dentist because antibiotics may be indicated or retreatment may be on the horizon.

Not normal: but not uncommon. Root canal therapy requires that you keep your mouth open for a long time. Keeping your mouth open for so long caused overstretching of the muscles and ligaments associated with TMJ.
