Need an xray: An xray by your foot specialist is the best way to determine if you have a stress fracture to the heel. Often stress fractures take up to 14 days to show up on an xray so an initial xray may be negative. A follow up xray would be needed to determine a stress fracture.

Stress fracture: hee: Below is a good answer but some times a stress fracture does not show up on xray and requires a mri. Xray or other: Clinical findings may represent several different possibilities (stress fracture, fracture, tendonitis, plantar fasciitis, infection, foreign body, etc), so imaging may be needed. Sometimes xrays don't pick up a stress fracture so you may need advanced imaging to detect a stress fracture. Hope this helps.
