Metabolis by-product: Uric acid is formed in the process of metabolism of proteins by the body. It can also form with high cellular turnover in persons undergoing chemotherapy or treatment for cancer. Uric acid can get to high levels and precipitate out in the body in joints, soft tissues and in the kidneys to give "gout". Medications, diet, hydration are the treatments.

What are the foods to avoid with excessive uric acid?

Red meat, etc.: The main foods to avoid or consume less of include red meat and seafood, also less dairy foods and milk, and foods with high fructose content. Increased vitamin c intake (foods with high vit c content) also helps, as does avoiding alcoholic beverages, which can dehydrate the body and thus increase the chance of a gouty attack. Losing weight also lowers the risk of a gouty attack and uric acid.

What are the vegetarian foods contains uric acid?

Dr. Randy Bakeranswered

Mushrooms, peas...: Foods do not contain uric acid but have purines which are metabolized into uric acid. The vegetarian food highest in purines are asparagus, cauliflower, lentils, lima & navy beans, mushrooms, oatmeal, peas & spinach. These can usually be eaten in moderation. More important than avoiding these might be avoiding alcohol & high-fructose corn syrup, as these raise uric acid levels.
