Take: Eat a lot of fiber in your diet, they sell fiber pills in the pharmacy too to increase fiber intake. Drink a lot of water. Take Ibuprofen or tylenol (acetaminophen) for pain. You can use a sitz bath to help. They also sell over the counter treatments for hemorrhoids. See your physician who can do some office based treatments or refer you appropriately to a GI specialist.

Prevention: The best treatment of hemorrhoidal inflammation is prevention. Keep your stools soft with fiber therapy by mouth, stool softeners as needed, and plenty of oral fluids to avoid dehydration. For acute flare-ups, sitz baths with epson salts 15minutes each 4-6x daily will relieve most discomfort.

It is important not: To make hemorrhoids worse. Cleaning after a bowel movement should be gentle. Use pre-moistened towlettes to dab the anus. Don’t wipe/rub. Pat anus dry. Avoid using harsh soaps that contain dyes or aromas. Cotton underwear absorbs moisture well. Sitz bathes can be helpful. Sit in a bathtub with warm water. There needs to be water to submerge the anal area. Soak 15 minutes – several times a day.
