Multiple reasons. : Neck pain can be due to multitude of reasons, stress, bad posture, underlying disease etc. Your pcp should be able to ask pertinent questions and, if needed, diagnostics can be ordered.

Position: More than likely, this is a positional problem. Most degenerative types of neck pain tend to be worse with standing (due to gravity). Consider the position your neck is in, as well as the size, shape, and firmness of what it's resting on. However, there are some serious conditions, such as bone tumors, that can be more painful at night.
