What are antibodies?

8 doctors weighed in across 3 answers

Part of immune syste: Antibodies are proteins made by your immune system to attach to things that the immune system is trying to eliminate from your body, such as bacteria and viruses. Normally they are made only against foreign substances (i.e. Those not naturally occurring in the body). Certain drugs, like Avastin (bevacizumab) for example, are also made as antibodies.

Immune proteins: Antibodies are complex proteins made by the immune system to act against bacteria, viruses, or other infections. They also are active in signaling between different types of cells and in the activity of cells of the immune system.
