Post OP Care: Commonly yes. I am not sure what the 'resection' was or what your real question is. But, an elderly patient on anesthesia is at great risk in general. So, going to the ICU is not uncommon.

Anesthesia effects: Elderly pts have many co-morbidities that impact anesthesia . If additionally a lung resection has occurred and the pt had marginal lung function . A trial of mechanical ventilation post-op in ICU care would not be unusual. The next key is to attempt early weaning from ventilator.
