PrEP vs PEP: There is both pre & post exposure prophylaxis for HIV now. Certainly if you know that you may be at risk for acquiring the infection you should discuss w/your doctor prep (pre exposure prophylaxis) & condoms. Post exposure prophylaxis should start immediately after exposure & certainly w/in the first 24 hours. Although you may not see your doc, consider seeing someone on vaca immediately.
