Avoid sick people: Bronchiolitis is a wheezing/runny nose/congestion illness caused by a virus called rsv. It is contracted from another person who has RSV (usually young children but could be anyone). Most children especially babies get it from daycare or preschool... So avoiding those places is important.

Avoid group care: The single best way to avoid bronchiolitis is to avoid group care. Frequent handwashing can also help.

Handwashing: Bronchiolitis is due to viruses like rsv, so anything that lowers virus transmission will help prevent bronchiolitis too. Frequent handwashing, not smoking (smoke exposure increases risk of respiratory infections by 100%), and avoiding taking small babies to public places in the winter can all help. For premature infants there is an injectable medication, synagis, (palivizumab) which can lower the risk of rsv.

GOOD HANDWASHING: As simple as practicing "good health habits!" and avoiding big crowds. Viruses are everywhere! bronchioloitis starts off like any cold, then it gets down to the chest, causing cough, noisy breathing, gagging/choking on mucus, becoming restless, sleepless, then the wheezing begins, loss of appetite, gasping for breath and not playful with excessive crying.Key to prevention is "good handwashing!".

Breastfeed: Breastmilk provides antibodies that protect the respiratory tract and helps keeps infants from being infected. Also, low levels of vitamin d have been associated with increased risk of respiratory infections, so talk to your doctor about what dose may be appropriate for your child.
