Screen for cancer: Pap smear is the process of taking scrapings from the uterine cervix and processing the material for examination by a pathologist. The pathologist evaluates the characteristics of the cells to establish the presence of abnormalities which range from mild dysplasia to cancer. Pap smear should be supplemented with testing for hpv.
