Primary care doctor: The Pap smear test (cervical smear) looks at cells from the cervix, checking for cervical cancer and for precancerous changes on the cervix. The cervix connects a woman's vagina to her uterus (womb). A Pap smear does not check the vagina, because swabbing the cervix to get cells for the smear only collects cervical cells. The exam and smear are done by primary care and Ob-Gyn doctors.
