Periodontal disease: Scale and root planning--commonly called "deep cleaning" is necessary whenever a patient has infection of the tender gingiva tissue that surrounds the bottom of our teeth. This tissue will react differently to treatment depending on the severity of the infection. Someone with mild periodontal disease can expect to have lingering discomfort for 1-2 days after the procedure; moderate 2-4 days.
