Clot /infection: Phlebitis is also called thrombophlebitis and is inflammation of a vein secondary to a clot within the vein. Phlebitis can either be in a superficial vein and is called superficial thrombophlebitis or in a deeper vein and is called dvt. Infection is an inflammation of an area usually due to bacteria. If it is in the skin it is called cellulitis and if there is pus with it, it is called an abscess.

Phlebitis: One is inflammation caused by bacteria or virus. The other is inflammation caused by the chemical reaction of the vessel wall to the clotted blood. Phlebitis is localized around the involved vessel while infection can occur almost anywhere.

Veins: Phlebitis is related to inflamation in the veins. It usually occurs in the superficial system in the legs. This is different from an infection which is the invasion of a host organism's bodily tissues by disease-causing organisms, their multiplication, and the reaction of host tissues to these organisms and the toxins they produce.
