Dr. Ted King answered

Inflammation: Phlebitis is an itis (inflammation) of a phleb (vein). Typically the symptoms of phlebitis are those of inflammation and include pain, swelling, warmth, and redness. It can sometimes be hard to tell the difference between phlebitis and a skin infection. Ultrasound can help sort this out and also make sure that the phlebitis doesn't extend into a deep vein with a clot.
