Several potentials: If there has been an associated injury, a fracture could certainly cause swelling and soreness. An infection is also a possibility, especially if there is associated redness and/or warmth. Olecranon bursitis is a condition at the elbow which can also cause swelling and pain. An aspiration ?: Olecranon bursitis can b inflammation, but they do have a tendency 2 become infected or chronic. An aspiration that reveals clear not cloudy fluid may need a steroid injection, wrapping nsaids & ice & rest. If cloudy it will b cultured and b started on an antibiotic which may b changed according 2 the culture results. Still rest.Ice, activity modification until gone. Successful rx=looks normal 2 u.
