Hernia surgery: Surgical repair of an umbilical hernia should theoretically last a lifetime. But hernia surgery can fail in some resulting in a recurrent hernia. Use of mesh may decrease hernia recurrence. Infection, obesity, diabetes, cigarette smoking may increase the risk of hernia repair failure.
