Toothpain: Many things can case tooth pain-cavities, infection, teething if they do not have all of their baby teeth, falling on their mouth, chewing things that they aren't supposed to- it is time to see a dentist or a pediatric dentist.

Maybe several things: At 3 years old he/she could be teething as primary molars usually come in at that time. He/she may have bumped a tooth and it may hurt even without outward signs. There may be decay or other oral disease. See a dentist for diagnosis.
