There's a bunch: Tylenol (acetaminophen) is considered the first-line pain reliever for its overall safety and efficacy unless you have a liver problem. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatories (nsaid's) such as ibuprofen, naprosyn, alleve, motrin, etc are also commonly used. Two supplements, glucosamine and chondroitin, have also been shown to be effective.

Depends: This is a difficult question to answer, there is no "best medicine" that fits everyone. This is why you go to a doctor. He/she will determine what medicine or treatment is best for you based upon your age, medical history, presence of other medical conditions etc. For instance, medications like Ibuprofen or Naproxen can be dangerous in older people with kidney disease and heart disease.
