Foreign body or dry : If it is only in one eye and it suddenly came on you may have a small foreign body on the cornea or conjunctiva. If it is both eyes and chronic it could be sign of dry eyes. See your eyemd for proper diagnosis and rx.

Many possibilities: The 3 most common in my experience are dry eye, recurrent corneal erosions, and corneal abrasion. It is possible for more serious causes and likely should have this checked by an ophthalmologist, particularly if the pain is associated with blurry or decreased vision.
