More than ~1.5 mg/dL: Or thereabouts. Whether it means anything is another story. Folks with gilbert's hover between here and maybe 3-4 without being sick. Folks who have hemolysis from illness or extreme athletics run a high bilirubin that's well tolerated. Liver disease and bile duct obstruction are likely to raise bile salts and the jaundice is thus more unpleasant.

How high?: A slightly elevated bilirubin or bilirubin at the upper end of normal is good for you. After that it depends on why the bilirubin is high. Abnormally elevated bilirubin may be due to hemolysis, liver inflammation. Bile duct obstruction, drug and drug effects etc and problem depends on the cause.

High billirubin: Elevation of billirubin can be caused production. Accelerated breakdown of red blood cells. Liver disease one of many functions is to remove from blood stream. Need to consult your doctor.

Many possibilities: There are many possible causes for high bilirubin, but they all come down to the liver either not processing bilirubin properly or the body producing more bilirubin than the liver can process.
