Most exercises okay: Avoid exercises that will cause your legs to cross in any way, even if just a little. This causes tension over the greater trochanter. Also avoid any exercise that causes any increase in pain, as this could suggest increasing inflammation. Stretch your it band and include massage on your lower it band to loosen. Hope this helps!

History and exam: A doctor can usually diagnose hip bursitis by talking to you about your complaints and then examining your hip. The doctor may also get an x-ray. Hip bursitis usually causes pain on the outside of the hip that is worse when you lay on that side. On exam, there is usually tenderness over the boney prominence on the outside of the hip.

A couple of days: It usually resolves quickly with a local steroid injection. If it perists, it may be secondary to low back issues and not a true bursitis.
