Insomnia: Depression is very possible, as are other psychiatric disorders such as anxiety and bipolar disorder. If you feel depression is an issue, see a psychiatrist. If insomnia persists, follow-up with a sleep specialist. Avoid sedatives and treat the cause if you know it (e.g., depression). Continue with proper sleep hygiene as well!

Depression: Did you see a sleep doctor who has interest in insomnia? Depression can cause insomnia but it is likely to be early morning insomnia. There are many other causes ... What usually works is a formal cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia by sleep psychologist. What usually makes you worse are use of sleep aids over the counter or by providers who dont specialize in sleep medicine.

Although sleep distubance is a feature of major depressive disorder, other symptoms have to be present at the same time for a diagnosis of depression to be entertained. Maybe yes,maybe no: Insomnia can be a symptom in many many medical and psychiatric conditions and can also be a disorder on its own. In the former conditions, if the underlying condition for which insomnia is a symptom is not treated, then the insomnia will continue.

Insomnia: Need more info....Do you smoke, do drugs, consume excessive caffeine, abuse etoh etc? What exactly is your sleep pattern. Have you gone to a sleep lab? Have you tried .5mg melatonin. Would love to help more but maybe someone more experienced than me can give you the answer you seek.
