Contact your PCP: If you have headache, decreased urination, blurry vision, or chest pain then the er is the right place to go. Otherwise contact your pcp right away. Your blood pressure and atrial fibrillation need appropriate long-term medical management which can be difficult to obtain just with an er visit.

No: This is not an emergency. Chest pain, breathing difficulty, passing out - those would be reasons to go to the er. You need a simple adjustment of medication which can be done over the phone. Call the on-call doctor for the doctor who's treating you and describe your vital signs to him/her over the phone. Have a list of your meds available when you call.

Dr. Alvin Lin answered

Atrial fibrillation: Afib is a usually a chronic condition managed as an outpatient by your family doc & cardiologist. However, if you're feeling lightheaded & dizzy, have chest pain, have an extremely fast heart rate (say >150bpm) and/or high/low blood pressure, etc then go to er. Otherwise, your doc can give you beta blocker to control heart rate & discuss anticoagulation options to lower risk for stroke.
