Support groups: Help in two ways -1) have him seen by an addictions specialist. 2) have him join a group of doctors fa cingular the same issue. State medical societies have such groups to help him manage. When he renews his license he will be asked about drug use. It will be better when answering yes to already be in treatment.

Voluntary treatment: You could encourage him to voluntarily get addiction treatment. There are good inpatient programs for such physicians. In most states, this would not endanger his medical license. Most states also have health professional service programs (or similar) who intervene with physicians who may be addicted or otherwise impaired, get them to appropriate treatment, and protect patients.
