A member asked:

Should we do an ultrasound on a sebaceous cyst before removing it?

Usually not needed: A sebaceous cyst arrises from a blocked oil gland in the skin. These are usually very superficial and can become quite large. The only time an ultrasound or other imaging (eg c/t scan) would be needed is if there is concern that it is some other type of deeper cyst.

No: If a mass is thought to be a sebaceous cyst on exam, there is no need for extra radiologic procedures prior to excisional biopsy.

Cyst removal: Sebaceous or epidermal inclusion cyst are very common skin lesions which do not require prior test before removal. The cyst will not revolve on its on and requires an excision for removal if desired by the patient.
