Urate crystals: Newborns can have a withdrawal bleed from separating from the mother's hormones. However, the most common thing we see is urate crystals in the diaper from the newborn being dehydrated. They look like an apricot or peach colored powder on the inside of the diaper. Babies normally lose up to 10 % of their birth weight the first week. Feed every 2-3 hrs and have the weight checked.

Normal event: Probably 1/10 infant females will have a small amount of menstrual blood as early as the 4th and seldom later than the 10th day after birth. It is seldom more than would cover a few q-tips.This is due to withdrawal of pregnancy hormones which stimulate the baby uterus. Many more will have a mucousy sticky discharge. It should be a one time event.
