First fix root canal: Most good general dentists can do routine root canal work. This must be rx first and inflammation/infection allowed to completely heal. Temporary filling, will likely be used. Permanent work, crown, etc. Will be dependent on the character of the tooth. An honest dentist will do work if he is confident @ it, or or will refer you to specialist for next step, and then refer u back to generalist.

Back teeth should be: Back teeth (not incisors or canines) that have been root canal treated should have crowns because a root canal treated tooth will become brittle and weaker over time. If a premolar or molar is not crowned, it will inevitably break & may result in tooth loss. Front teeth should be crowned if the tooth was badly broken, is discolored, or if the dentist feels it is susceptible to breakage.

Agreed: Agreed, also root canal treated teeth can darken over time...This may be an unsightly esthetic concern. Methods to treat this situation can be crowns, non-vital bleaching and possibly veneers (the strength of the remaining tooth should be re-evaluated prior to this).

Crown / root canal: We usually put a crown on after a root canal. The reason is that the structural integrity is compromised after a root canal on posterior teeth. I have found the teeth become brittle after a root canal. We put a crown on the tooth to act like a helmet to protect the tooth form the forces of chewing. Root canaled teeth also can change color, which can be masked by a crown.

Depends on location: If a tooth other than a front tooth has a root canal, a crown may be an excellent solution for appearance & protection of the tooth. If a crown is not placed, brittle teeth can break down, become decayed & most of the time the tooth is lost. After extraction a bridge or implant is a possible remedy. Hopefully bone grafting material was placed when the failing tooth was extracted.

In most cases yes: Teeth that have been treated with a root canal are typically crowned. This is done for two main reasons. First, after the root canal the tooth may become brittle. A crown keeps the tooth from breaking. Secondly, the crown provides a seal to keep bacteria from entering the root and causing the root canal to fail.

Sometimes: Teeth in back of your mouth (molars and premolars) often need a crown after having a root canal to prevent tooth fracture. Sometimes teeth in front of your mouth also need a crown after a root canal. C.

Frequently: Oftentimes a tooth that needs a root canal, does so because of a deep cavity. Many of these teeth have lost much of their strength, so a crown is made to protect it. A thoughtful dentist will thoroughly evaluate what your individual conditions are and advise you if a crown is necessary or not.

Most of the time: All posterior teeth require it to prevent the tooth from breaking. Some anterior teeth also require it.
