Not to worry: The neurologist wants to examine the fluid surrounding the spinal cord. There are many diseases that can be diagnosed with the fluid. The needle will not go through the spinal cord. This procedure is performed quite often.

Spinal tap: It sounds like you are talking about a spinal tap, usually it is done for diagnostic purposes, i.E to look for infections, blood, to check pressure, etc.
