Self protection: As organs such as the liver and kidneys fail, the body is less able to clear breakdown products of food metabolism, especially protein. As organs fail, the body will decrease the intake of protein in an attempt to decrease the metabolic demand placed upon the failing organ. Also, kidney function in patients with advanced cirrhosis is often very impaired and would cause decreased food intake.

See your doctor: Heavy alcohol use with subsequent liver damage and cirrhosis puts you at risk for severe complications of liver disease, including liver cancer, internal bleeding from varices, confusion (encephalopathy) and ascites. You should see a gastroenterologist or hepatologist for a full evaluation. Loss of appetite is a concern and should be evaluated thoroughly and quickly.
