A member asked:

Is it true that all or most people with ulcerative colitis are hard to treat?

5 doctors weighed in across 2 answers

Not True: Not necessarily true as ulcerative colitis can have a wide range of presentations and responses to medical management. The disease may only involve the rectum(proctitis) and be managed with topical medication to full colonic involvement requiring systemic treatment to control symptoms with medications as per a gastroenterologist. Surgery, if necessary is best managed by a colorectal surgeon.

NO if treated: Good medical treatment options are available , need regular follow up by your doctor, if medical treatment fails surgical removal of colon and rectum is required. It has high cancer risk needs regular endoscopic examinations.
