See below: The epidural is placed to decrease pain, most often that associated with childbirth. The medications used numb the nerves that serve the affected area. The epidural also causes vasodilation of blood vessels below the level of the epidural. This can cause drop in blood pressure. All these effects are temporary.

Lumbar epidural: They are regional type of anesthesia. They affect parts of your body usually from waist down. They do not affect the entire body unless there is a major complication of reaction.
